Grainne teaches a traditional form of yoga called Satyananda Yoga which was developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and his lineage. The Satyananda approach incorporates the whole person, not just the body. There is a strong emphasis on awareness and students are encouraged to learn about all aspects of their personality through yoga.
Grainne's classes include a balanced mix of asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), Yoga Nidra (a type of deep relaxation unique to Satyananda yoga), and/or meditation. Asanas are taught in a relaxed and non-competitive environment with an emphasis on going within and learning to listen to the body. Students are encouraged to progress at their own pace and as their experience deepens, more complex and challenging practices are gradually introduced. Breath awareness is explored through various pranayama techniques and over time students come to appreciate the power of the breath to heal and to maintain physical, mental and emotional balance. Yoga nidra and meditation are generally taught at the end of the class. Yoga nidra helps students to develop a greater ability to relax and relieve tension from mind and body. Meditation helps to quieten the mind and when practiced over time, can help students to develop greater awareness and wisdom.
